Drowning Statistics

  • According to the CDC, drowning is the leading cause of accidental death for keiki ages 1-4 years old 

  • In Hawai'i, drowning is now the leading cause of death for keiki and teenagers ages 1-16 years old  

  • New data reveals that Hawai'i has the second highest drowning rate in the nation  

                           

  • Native Hawaiians comprise a higher proportion of the drowning victim population than the estimated general public 

  • Local Oahu residents are at a slightly higher rate (56%)  for ocean drownings when compared to

       non-residents 

  • More than half (57%) of ocean drownings occurred on the eastern part of the island, from Sand Island, around Hanauma, Makapu'u  and to Kailua Bay

  • Hawai'i has an average of nearly 40 deaths a year related to drowning
